How to Authenticate/Re-authenticate SEMRush Analytics in Google Sheets, Google Data Studio & Microsoft Excel

This guide gives instructions on how to successfully authenticate SEMRush Analytics.

Data Source Access Requirements:

The SEMRush connector requires you have set up an API account with SEMrush and have purchased a subscription with them for API request units. Supermetrics does not include this with the connector. If you have not done so already, please visit this site to get started with your SEMrush account https://www.semrush.com/api-use/ and follow this guide SEMRush API units


Authenticating with Google Sheets

To authenticate SEMRush Analytics in Google Sheets, please do the following steps:

1. Open up the Supermetrics sidebar in your Google Sheets. 

2. Select SEMRush Analytics in the sidebar, under data source.

3. Insert your SEMrush API key and click on login

If you don't have an API key and a SEMRush subscription, please see https://www.semrush.com/api-use/

4. Select the query type and insert the domain/s. To select multiple domains, please separate them with commas. To learn more on domain/s, please see Special Formatting Requirement for "Domain vs. Domain" Query Type

As an additional filter, you can select the display date. To learn more, please see Using the 'Display Date' Option for SEMrush Analytics

5. You have completed all the steps. You can now go back to the sidebar and select your SEMRush account under data source.

Re-authenticating with Google Sheets:

Authenticating with Data Studio:

To authenticate SEMRush Analytics in Google Data Studio, please do the following steps:

1. Click on add data.

2. Search for SEMRush by Supermetrics and click on it.

3. Click on Authorize. If you wish to learn more about data security and data privacy, please see this page.

4. Insert your SEMrush API key and click on login

If you don't have an API key and a SEMRush subscription, please see https://www.semrush.com/api-use/

5. Click on the link below to authenticate your user account. 

With this link, you can also add or delete users.

6. Click on OK, let's continue to continue with that user. If you wish to log in with a different user, click on Add SEMRush user account. Click on remove to remove the user account.

- If your Data Studio account belongs to multiple teams, you will see the option to select the team you wish to use. Go to the link below and select the team name with your license to proceed. (If you only belong to one team, skip to the next step).

7. Select query type and click on next.


8. Insert the domain/s. To select multiple domains, please separate them with commas. To learn more on domain/s, please see Special Formatting Requirement for "Domain vs. Domain" Query Type

As additional filters you can:

9. Click on add on the bottom right side to continue. 

10. As a final step, click on add to report.

Re-authenticating with Data Studio:

Authenticating with Excel:

To authenticate SEMRush Analytics in Excel, please do the following steps:

1. Click on data and open up the Supermetrics sidebar in Excel.

2. Select SEMRush Analytics in the sidebar under data source.

2. An automatic popup will open up, insert your SEMRush API key and click on start.

3. Select query type and insert the domain/s. To select multiple domains, please separate them with commas. To learn more on domain/s, please see Special Formatting Requirement for "Domain vs. Domain" Query Type


As additional filters, you can:

-Choose the number of rows per item.

-Select the display date. To learn more, please see Using the 'Display Date' Option for SEMrush Analytics


4. You have completed all the steps. You can now go back to the sidebar and select your SEMRush account under data source.

Common errors:

If you encounter any of the following errors below, please see the guide linked after the error message.

  • Error: "This was a reauthorization request for user X but logged in as user Y", please see this guide
  • Error: "You're not allowed to run queries with this license #12345. This is because you have not been assigned to the license as a valid user." please see this guide.
  • Error: "This action is not supported when you are signed into multiple accounts". please see this guide.
  • If you no longer see a specific account/page/etc. when logging in, please see this guide
  • If you haven't managed to authenticate you might be affected by an issue at Google account management. For more information, please see this guide.
