Shopify: Permissions and troubleshooting guide

This guide will walk you through how to solve issues with Shopify permissions when pulling data from it into Supermetrics. Learn more about how Supermetrics streamlines Shopify reporting.

Log into a Shopify store as a Partner
  1. Open Shopify and select Shopify Partners.

  2. Select the store you want to connect with Supermetrics and click Log in.

  3. This will open the Store screen. At this point, your authentication information is stored in a cookie.

  4. Open the destination you want Supermetrics to pull data to — either Google Sheets, or Data Studio.

  5. Select Shopify as a data source from the Supermetrics for Google Sheets side panel or in the Supermetrics Data Studio connector gallery, and add the store name (in URL format) in the authentication screen.

  6. Click Start.

Add stores (Google Sheets)
  1. Start from the Shopify Partner view and log in to another store.
  2. Click Add new user from the side panel.

  3. Enter the corresponding store name in URL format.
  4. Confirm that both logins are registered and start building your queries.
Add stores (Data Studio)
  1. Start from the Shopify Partner view and log in to another store.

  2. In the Supermetrics for Data Studio connector gallery, select Shopify and click Try

  3. Click on the link at the end of the sentence that starts with “To add more/manage user accounts…”

  4. Click +Add new account to add a new user account.

Troubleshooting

403 Forbidden error

In the first step of the authentication process, you'll need to enter the name of the store you want to log into. This is the first part of the store's URL — so for mystorename.myshopify.com, for example, the store name would be mystorename.

If the whole URL is added, or if any dots or whitespace is added to it, the 403 Forbidden error will be triggered.

To fix this, close the browser tab, reopen Google Sheets, and open the Supermetrics sidebar. Then, click Shopify. Reauthenticate with the store name, checking first to make sure it's spelled and formatted correctly.

Here's an example of a correctly formatted store name:

And an incorrect one:

Authentication failed

Occasionally, the Shopify app might fail to authenticate. If you encounter the ‘Authentication failed’ message after you've reauthenticated, resetting the connection completely should solve the problem.

To do this:

  1. Log into Shopify.
  2. Navigate to Apps.
  3. Delete the Supermetrics app.
  4. Log out the Shopify data source.
  5. Remove the Shopify data source from Data Studio.
  6. Reauthenticate Shopify in Supermetrics to reestablish the connection.
