Ahrefs report building guide

Use the Ahrefs data source connector to pull data such as URL and domain rankings, traffic metrics, and backlink details. Create a report to identify which websites the traffic is coming from and build a detailed technical SEO report to fix and improve your website pages and links.

Once you’ve connected to Ahrefs, you're ready to create your first queries!


Query types for this data source

When connecting to the Ahrefs data source, you need to select a query type. The query type defines what sort of metrics and dimensions are available.

  • Overview: Pull overview metrics from Backlink profile, Organic search and Paid search.
  • Backlinks: Understand specific referring pages yielding high and/or low traffic and their overall domain rating
  • Referring domains: Shows website domains for which target URL is referring
  • Organic keywords: Shows the organic keywords for which the target URL ranks for
  • Top pages: Shows which pages of the target URL get the most organic search traffic
  • Paid pages: Shows which pages of the target URL get the most paid search traffic
  • Keyword explorer: Overview: Get relevant keyword ideas with search volume, keyword difficulty, and other advanced metrics

See paid and organic traffic

Use the "Overview" query type.


The "Paid traffic" metric shows an estimation of the number of monthly visits that your target gets from paid search for a keyword. The "Organic traffic" metric shows an estimation of the number of monthly visitors that your target gets from organic search for a keyword.


For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Select the Overview query type and insert the target URL.
  2. Select the Paid traffic and Organic traffic metrics.
  3. Select the Target URL dimension to split the query results by the target URL.


See backlinks and domain rating

Use the "Overview" query type.


The "Backlink count" metric shows the total number of links from other websites pointing to your target. The "Referring domains" metric shows the total number of unique domains linking to your target. The "Domain rating (DR)" metric shows the strength of a domain's backlink profile compared to the others in our database on a 100-point scale. 


For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Select the Overview query type and insert the target URL.
  2. Select the Backlink count, Referring domains, and Domain rating (DR) metrics.
  3. Select the Target URL metric to split the query results by the target URL.

Use the "Overview" query type.


The "Ahrefs rank" metric shows the strength of your target's backlink profile compared to the other websites in our database, with rank #1 being the strongest. 


For best results in Looker Studio, use the scorecard chart type.

  1. Select the Overview query type and insert the target URL.
  2. Select the Ahrefs rank metric.
