Error: "Authentication failed" & "You need to re-authenticate at X and then run the query again."

This guide will walk you through on how to fix generic authentication errors. This type of error occurs when the data source is not completely authenticated, and therefore the authentication fails.

As a first step, please re-authenticate the data source by following one of the guides below:

Google Sheets: How to re-authenticate a Google Sheets connector

Microsoft Excel: How to re-authenticate an Excel connector

API: How to re-authenticate an API connector

Incognito/different browser

If the error persists, please re-authenticate the data source in another browser (eg: from Chrome to Firefox etc.) and if that doesn't help, please do the same in incognito mode.

- Follow the section "Removing a user account" and click on reauthenticate. In some cases, you might need to remove completely all user accounts to get a fresh login. To do so, click on the bin icon and click on continue to proceed.

If everything fails

If and only the error persists, please remove the data source completely by following this guide:

How Do I Completely Remove a Data Source from Data Studio?. Note that you must be the owner of the data source file to complete all of the steps.

- Click on revoke. Please make sure to click on revoke access.


- Click on remove to confirm.
