How to Authenticate/Re-authenticate Facebook Public Data in Google Sheets, Google Data Studio & Microsoft Excel

This guide gives instructions on how to authenticate Facebook Public Data with Google Sheets, Google Data Studio and Microsoft Excel.

"If everything fails..." 

Data Source Access Requirements:

The Facebook Public Data connector does not work in the same way as the other Facebook connectors, as it does not require to log in to a specific account. Thus, no access requirements are required for this data source. It allows to collect publicly available data about page and page posts.


Authenticating with Google Sheets

If you are authenticating Facebook Public Data in Google Sheets for the first time, please do the following steps:

1. Open up the Supermetrics sidebar in your Google Sheets.

2. Select Facebook Public Data in the sidebar, under data source

3. Select query type.

The Facebook Public Data connector supports 3 type of queries:

  • Facebook page data - gathers data about the page itself, like Likes, About, Website Link, etc.
  • Facebook posts by a page - gathers data about posts made to the page, such as Post Link, Reaction counts, Comment counts, etc.
  • Facebook shares for URLs - gathers data about specific URLs shared, such as URL, Share count, Comment count, etc.

4. Depending on the query type you choose, insert page name/s or ID/s.

Re-authenticating with Google Sheets:

To re-authenticate Facebook Public Data in Google Sheets, please go to this guide.

Authenticating with Data Studio:

To authenticate Facebook Public Data in Google Data Studio, please do the following steps:

1. Click on add data.

2. Search for Facebook Public Data by Supermetrics and click on Select when selecting it.

3. Click on Authorize. If you wish to learn more about data security and data privacy, please see this page

4. Select the query type and click on next. 

5. Please select again the query type. Depending on the query type you choose, insert page name/s or ID/s.

The Facebook Public Data connector supports 3 type of queries:

  • Facebook page data - gathers data about the page itself, like Likes, About, Website Link, etc.
  • Facebook posts by a page - gathers data about posts made to the page, such as Post Link, Reaction counts, Comment counts, etc.
  • Facebook shares for URLs - gathers data about specific URLs shared, such as URL, Share count, Comment count, etc.

6. Click on add on the bottom right side to continue. 

7. As a final step, click on add to report

Authenticating with Excel:

To authenticate Facebook Public Data in Excel, please do the following steps:

1. Click on data and open up the Supermetrics sidebar in Excel.

2. Select Facebook Public Data in the sidebar, under data source.

3. An automatic popup with open, click on start.

4. You can now go back to the sidebar, select the query type. Depending on the query type you choose, insert page name/s or ID/s.

The Facebook Public Data connector supports 3 type of queries:

  • Facebook page data - gathers data about the page itself, like Likes, About, Website Link, etc.
  • Facebook posts by a page - gathers data about posts made to the page, such as Post Link, Reaction counts, Comment counts, etc.

"If everything fails..." 

Common errors:

If you encounter any of the following errors below, please see the guide linked after the error message. 

  • Error: "Authentication failed" & "You need to re-authenticate at X and then run the query again.", please see this guide.
  • Error: "You're not allowed to run queries with this license #12345. This is because you have not been assigned to the license as a valid user." please see this guide.
  • Error: "This action is not supported when you are signed into multiple accounts". please see this guide.
  • If you haven't managed to authenticate you might be affected by an issue at Google account management. For more information, please see this guide.
