How to convert your Google Analytics data to Google Analytics 4 data in Google Sheets

Universal Analytics — known as Google Analytics — will be sunset after July 1, 2023, and no new data will go through Google Analytics after that date. The solution is to move your reports to use Google Analytics 4 as the data source. Learn more about the change in our Google Analytics 4 knowledge base.

To help you with the transition, we've created a query conversion tool for Supermetrics for Google Sheets to migrate your Google Analytics (GA) queries to Google Analytics 4 (GA4). The tool lets you choose a GA4 connection (login), map GA views to GA4 accounts/properties, and get a copy of your file with the GA4 queries in place of GA queries. All fields are replaced with the closest equivalent, and a summary sheet helps you check the changes. All other queries in the spreadsheet will be copied with no changes.

Review changes after converting your queries

After running the conversion tool, you may want to review the new queries as the structure of GA4 data is different, segments will be dropped, and some fields are no longer compatible. The ConversionSummary sheet will help you track the changes.

To get segment data, you may need to set up filters. Learn more about using filters in Google Sheets queries.

Instructions

  1. Open the Supermetrics sidebar, and scroll down to Google Analytics 4 migration.
  2. Select a GA4 connection, or add a new one, and click Confirm.

  3. Next, map the views to migrate. You'll see a list of all views used in the GA queries in the current file. Select the corresponding account/property in GA4 or skip a view if it's no longer in use. When the views are mapped, click Next.
  4. Once you're ready, click Apply and migrate.
  5. Wait for the refresh to go through, and follow the link to open the copy of your file with the migrated queries.

  6. Check the ConversionSummary sheet to see what fields were migrated and which ones are no longer present in GA4.
