Microsoft Advertising report building guide

With the Microsoft Advertising data source, you can find out how your audience responds to your ads. Aggregate data from all your advertising and marketing platforms to create cross-channel reports and get a full picture of your advertising performance.

For a full list of metrics and dimensions available in our Microsoft Advertising data source connector, take a look at our Microsoft Advertising documentation.

Once you’ve connected to Microsoft Advertising, you’re ready to create your first queries!

Try these queries

See the following use cases for examples on how to set up queries.

See impressions, clicks, and cost

Explore the number of times your ad has been clicked, how many unique people have seen it, and how much your ads have cost this year.

The "Impressions" metric shows the number of times an ad has been displayed on search results pages. Without impressions, there are no clicks or conversions.

The "Clicks" metric shows the number of clicks, and the clicks are what you pay for in your ad campaign. Clicks typically include a customer clicking an ad on a search results page or on a website on the search network, but they can also come from other sources.

The "Cost" metric shows the campaign cost in the currency of the advertising account.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the bar chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Year to date.
  2. Select the Clicks, Impressions, and Cost metrics.
  3. Select the Year & month dimension to split the query results by month.

The ad spend is given in the currency used by your Microsoft Advertising data source. You can convert the currency to other currencies in Google Sheets and Looker Studio. Learn more about currency conversion.

See conversions and cost per campaign

Try this to see how many customers took action after viewing your ad, and compare this to the cost of your advertising campaign. We fetch numbers for the last 28 days and per campaign in this example.

The "Conversions" metric shows the number of conversions. A conversion is the completion of an action by a customer after viewing your ad. The action could be purchasing your product, registering for your webinar, joining an organization, or whatever you consider your goal and best measure of the ad's success.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Last 28 days.
  2. Select the Conversions and Cost metrics.
  3. Select the Campaign name dimension to split the query results by campaign name.

See revenue and cost

View the revenue of your advertising campaign compared to the cost for this year, and sort the data per month.

The "Revenue" metric shows the revenue optionally reported by the advertiser as a result of conversions. It corresponds to the optional revenue parameter of a Microsoft Advertising campaign analytics tracking script.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the combo chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Year to date.
  2. Select the Revenue and Cost metrics.
  3. Select the Month dimension to split the query results by month.
