Google Ads report building guide

Stay on top of your ad spend, conversions, and other metrics across all your Google Ads campaigns. Create an overall view of what gets the attention of your audience — so you can focus on what matters.

For a full list of metrics and dimensions available in our Google Ads data source connector, take a look at our Google Ads documentation.

Once you’ve connected to Google Ads, you’re ready to create your first query in Google Sheets, Looker Studio (formerly Data Studio), or Excel.

Try these queries

See the following use cases for examples of how to set up queries.

See your monthly ad spend

Fetch data on how much you’ve spent on ads per month this year.

The "Cost" metric is a sum of your cost-per-click (CPC) and cost-per-thousand impressions (CPM) costs during a set time period.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the bar chart type.

  1. Set the date range to This year to date.
  2. Select the Cost metric.
  3. Select the Year & month dimension to split the query results by month.

The cost is given in the currency used by your Google Ads data source. You can convert the currency to other currencies in Google Sheets and Looker Studio. Learn more about currency conversion.

See impressions, link clicks, and cost per campaign

Explore how many people have seen your ad and how many times people have clicked your link. In this example, we fetch data for the previous month, split it by campaign, and compare the results to the cost.

The "Impressions" metric shows how often your ad has appeared on a search results page or website on the Google Network.

The "Clicks" metric shows how many times people clicked on the link to your ad.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the table chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Last month.
  2. Select the Impressions, Clicks, and Cost metrics.
  3. Select the Campaign name dimension to split the query results by campaign.

See conversions

Use the "Conversions" metric to see how many times people performed an action based on your ad. An action can be a newsletter signup, purchase, or app installation, for example.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the time series chart type.

  1. Set the date range to Last month.
  2. Select the Conversions metric.
  3. Select the Date dimension to split the query results by date.

See clicks, conversions, and cost

Take a look at how many times your ad has been clicked, and how many times viewers of the ads have taken action. In this example, we split the data by date, and compare the data to the cost.

For best results in Looker Studio, use the time series chart type.

  1. Set the date range to This month.
  2. Select the Clicks, Conversions, and Cost metrics.
  3. Select the Date dimension to split the query results by date.

Set up scheduled refreshes for your reports

You can set up scheduled refreshes for your reports created in Google Sheets and Excel. Follow the instructions on how to create and manage scheduled reports in Google Sheets and how to set up scheduled report triggers in Excel.

In Looker Studio, you can have a copy of your report emailed to you and important stakeholders at regular intervals.
