Google Analytics Restricted Field Errors

This guide applies to the following type of error:

Restricted field(s): <fieldxxx> requires a feature or integration to be enabled for <propertyname>. Please see <this guide> for further instructions


In the past, these may have looked like this:

Restricted dimension(s): ga:dcmclicksiteplacement, ga:dcmclicksiteplacementid can only be queried under certain conditions. For details see https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/reporting/core/dimsmets


Below are several sections that cover specific types of these errors and how to fix the issue.


Demographics and Interests Restricted Fields

This applies to fields for user demographics like "ga:useragebracket" and "ga:usergender".


The error appears if the view or properties does not have "Demographics and Interest reports" enabled. Please see this guide for how to enable the reporting and try again:

Google Display & Video 360 Restricted Fields

This applies to fields relating to the Google Display & Video 360 reporting integration, such as "ga:dbmClickAdvertiser". You can identify these fields as they always start with "ga:dbm..."


These fields require that the account is for Google Analytics 360 and that the Google Display & Video 360 integration has been enabled. Please see this guide for the requirements and steps to enable this:

Google Search Ads 360 Restricted Fields

This applies to fields relating to the Google Search Ads 360 reporting integration, such as "ga:dscost". You can identify these fields as they always start with "ga:ds..."

Google Campaign Manager 360 Restricted Fields

This applies to fields relating to the Google Campaign Manager 360 reporting integration, such as "ga:dcmfloodlightrevenue". You can identify these fields as they always start with "ga:dcm..."

Google Ad Manager Restricted Fields

This applies to fields relating to the Google Ad Manager reporting integration, such as "ga:dfpImpressions". You can identify these fields as they always start with "ga:dfp..."

Google Ads Restricted Fields

This applies to fields relating to the Google Ads reporting integration, such as "ga:adMatchedQuery" You can identify these fields as they always start with "ga:ad..." or "ga:adwords..."


These fields may require that the Google Analytics account is linked to a Google Ads account. Please see this guide for the requirements and steps to link accounts:

For Other Instances Not Covered Above

Some fields may have additional requirements or may not work in combination with other fields. Google Analytics has a tool to help with this, the Dimension & Metrics Explorer.


It has requirements listed for certain fields, like this:

As well as a feature that lets you select certain fields and see if they are compatible, with those that are not being greyed out. For example, after clicking the box to select "Google Ads: Ad Group", these options are shown as greyed out, meaning they are not compatible with this field and should not be used in a query together:
